In 1989, a miner named Heitor Dimas Barbosa completed his years-long excavation of a hillside in Paraíba state, northeast Brazil, and extracted tourmalines with a colour that had never been seen in the trade. Neon blue, neon green, electric turquoise, colours that seemed to glow in low light. The cause was an unusual concentration of copper in the stone’s chemistry, producing an absorption spectrum unlike standard iron- or manganese-coloured tourmalines. Paraíba tourmaline entered the market and immediately commanded prices several times those of any other tourmaline variety.
The chemistry behind the colour
Paraíba tourmaline is elbaite, the same species as the pink, green and blue tourmalines found worldwide, but with copper as the primary chromophore. Standard elbaite uses iron and manganese for colour. Copper is rare in tourmaline because the geological conditions that produce copper-bearing tourmaline are extremely unusual. The result is a saturation and fluorescent quality in the blue-green range that standard tourmaline cannot achieve regardless of quality. A copper content above approximately 0.3% is generally considered necessary for the characteristic glow; the finest Brazilian stones contain significantly more.
Brazil, Nigeria and Mozambique: the geographic debate
The 1989 Brazilian discovery defined the category, but deposits with copper-bearing tourmaline have since been found in Nigeria (2001) and Mozambique (2005). The question of whether non-Brazilian copper-bearing tourmalines deserve the Paraíba name divided the trade for years. The current consensus, reflected in major laboratory practice, is that copper-bearing tourmaline from any origin may be called Paraíba tourmaline, with the origin appended. Brazilian material remains the most desirable and most expensive. Nigerian and Mozambican material is substantially less expensive for equivalent copper content, and the colour saturation of the finest African material approaches but rarely equals the finest Brazilian.
Price: what to expect
Brazilian Paraíba of one carat or more with vivid colour sells at $5,000–50,000 per carat at wholesale. Material above three carats of fine quality is exceptional and has sold for over $100,000 per carat at auction. Nigerian Paraíba in comparable quality ranges from $500–5,000 per carat. Mozambican material spans a similar range. For all origins, the colour must be verified as copper-bearing by laboratory analysis. Colour alone is not sufficient for identification, and the copper content must be confirmed by EDXRF or ICP analysis to support the Paraíba designation.
Identification
Refractive index in Paraíba is similar to other elbaites: 1.614–1.666. The birefringence is around 0.018–0.020. The identifying test is chemical analysis for copper. A stone that visually resembles Paraíba but lacks confirmed copper content is not a Paraíba tourmaline regardless of colour. Inclusions in Brazilian Paraíba often include fine growth tubes; the stones from Mozambique tend to have fewer inclusions. Clarity is generally good to excellent in fine material from all origins.
What to look for when buying
Always require a laboratory report specifically confirming copper content and Paraíba designation. Check the origin statement carefully, as Brazilian origin carries a significant price premium over Nigerian or Mozambican. Evaluate colour in daylight and incandescent light, as the neon quality should be apparent in both. Avoid stones described as Paraíba without documentation, and be cautious of unusually low prices, which often indicate either non-copper tourmaline sold under a misleading description, or heavily included material that photographs better than it appears in person.
