Kashmir sapphire is the reference point against which all other blue sapphire is measured. Not because it is always the bluest, some Burmese and Sri Lankan stones can match or exceed Kashmir’s saturation in certain lighting, but because the quality of the blue in the finest Kashmir material has a distinctive velvety, non-directional quality that collectors describe as the most desirable in any stone of any species. Understanding what produces this quality is inseparable from understanding why the price is what it is.
The geology that created the colour
The Kashmir deposit sits in the Zanskar Range at approximately 4,500 metres elevation. The sapphires form in pegmatites and were first discovered by landslide in 1881, exposing a previously buried deposit. Intense mining from 1882 through the early twentieth century essentially exhausted the accessible material. Subsequent small-scale exploration has found limited quantities. The altitude and remote location make large-scale extraction economically marginal even with today’s prices.
The characteristic velvety appearance of Kashmir blue is caused by fine rutile silk, needles of titanium dioxide, distributed through the stone at a density that scatters light evenly without causing haze. The stone does not look glassy or transparent in the way that a heavily heated, silk-free sapphire might; it has an internal depth that absorbs and returns light in a way that appears almost three-dimensional. This quality is not reliably reproducible by treatment and has not been replicated by any other deposit.
Documentation requirements
Kashmir origin for a sapphire must be confirmed by a major gemmological laboratory. The laboratories with the deepest expertise in Kashmir and the most market recognition for this determination are SSEF (Switzerland), Gübelin (Switzerland), and GIA (United States). The origin report should explicitly state Kashmir origin, not simply state that characteristics are consistent with Kashmir. Many buyers in the serious collector market require two reports from different laboratories for stones above certain size thresholds. The cost of two reports is negligible relative to the price of the stone.
Price context
Fine Kashmir sapphire of two to five carats with vivid blue and a major laboratory origin certificate regularly trades at $20,000–100,000 per carat at auction and in dealer markets. Exceptional stones, ten carats or more of exceptional colour and clarity, have sold above $200,000 per carat. Smaller stones with less saturated colour or minor treatment notes are available at lower prices, but the market becomes thin below two carats for most buyers seeking investment-grade material. Prices have increased consistently over two decades.
What to watch for
Be cautious of Kashmir origin claims without documentation from a recognised laboratory. Kashmir is one of the most frequently misrepresented origins in the coloured stone trade, and a dealer’s personal assurance of origin carries no weight without a certificate. Verify the laboratory report number directly with the issuing laboratory before any transaction.
