Neutral silver, polishes to a near-mirror finish. Matte and brushed finishes are commonly used in contemporary jewellery

67% iron, 17% chromium, 12% nickel, 2.3% molybdenum, trace carbon (< 0.03%) and manganese

Hallmarking & identification

No precious metal hallmark. Marked 316L or 'Surgical Steel' in jewellery contexts. 'Surgical steel' is a marketing term; all 316L is surgical grade but the term has no regulatory definition in jewellery.

Care & maintenance

Virtually maintenance-free. Clean with warm soapy water or mild cleaner. Polishes easily with a soft cloth. Resistant to most chemicals including chlorine and sweat.

Market & pricing

Very low material cost compared to precious metals. Labour and finishing are the primary cost drivers. Extremely accessible, and the dominant metal in fashion and men's jewellery.
