FTIR Spectrometer

Laboratory infrared fingerprinting for polymers, fillers, coatings, and some treatments

Typical price$ 8000 - 60000
PortabilityLow portability
Field noteLab instrument, usually not field portable

How to use it

  1. Clean the sample surface and confirm the test area is safe to contact or scan
  2. Choose transmission, reflection, or ATR mode depending on the material and mounting
  3. Collect a background spectrum before measuring the gemstone or suspect zone
  4. Measure the stone, filler, coating, or polymer-rich area using consistent pressure and alignment
  5. Compare absorption peaks with reference spectra for jade polymer, oils, resins, wax, amber, pearls, and coatings
  6. Document the spectrum and note whether the result supports treatment, natural material, or further testing
