Obsidian is very common near volcanic regions; special varieties (rainbow, snowflake, fire obsidian) are more collectible.

Confused with
  • Black Tourmaline Schorl tourmaline has striations, higher hardness, and different SG.
  • Black Spinel Black spinel has higher hardness (8) and much higher SG.
  • Jet Jet has much lower SG (~1.3) and can be scratched easily.
Expert tip

Obsidian is a natural glass ÔÇö it has a conchoidal fracture and sharp edges. Rainbow obsidian shows gold-red iridescence from nano-inclusions; snowflake obsidian shows white cristobalite spherulites.
