What to look for

Under 10x loupe: irregular internal surfaces that catch light and appear bright, wing-like, or feathery. Open fractures reach the surface. Healed fractures are sealed and may contain liquid.

What it means

Open fractures in emerald and ruby are often treated with oil, resin, or filling. Flash effects inside fractures can indicate filling treatment.

To detect oil filling in emerald, use darkfield illumination and look into fractures for an orange-red flash effect.
