Haüyne is exceptionally rare in faceted form; top blue material from the Eifel region of Germany is virtually unobtainable commercially.

Confused with
  • Blue Sapphire Sapphire has much higher RI (1.762–1.770), SG (3.95–4.03), and hardness (9).
  • Tanzanite Tanzanite is trichroic with different SG and lower hardness.
  • Sodalite Sodalite has a similar orange LW UV fluorescence but lower RI and much lower price.
Expert tip

Haüyne's intense blue rivals fine sapphire and tanzanite at a fraction of the rarity; most facetable crystals come as small grains in volcanic ejecta from Germany's Eifel region and Italy's Campanian Ignimbrite.
